How Artsy is Promoting Black-Owned Art Galleries

In 2019, a study looked at racial inequality in the art world. The numbers they calculated showed that in America, the art displayed in galleries and museums is primarily from white male artists.

The study found that 85.4% of works of art in American museums are from white artists. The study also showed that 87% of artists featured amongst 18 major U.S museums were men. African American artists were the lowest represented in the survey making up only 1.2% of artists featured in American museums and art galleries.

The global art marketplace company, Artsy, is hoping to address the poor representation of African American artists in the United States. In late-October, they unveiled the “Imagining the New Normal” collection curated by artist, Mikhaile Solomon. The collection shines a spotlight on Black artists and Black-owned galleries.
